Several different versions of the Malabar Jr. emerged from the offices of John Alden. The first, a 29½-footer available as either a gaff or marconi sloop, came out in 1924. By that time, there was considerable interest in small, wholesome cruisers that could be cheaply built, and Alden responded to that interest. It is not well known, however, that the inspiration for this boat was the renowned and able Friendship sloop.
