In Paketi, Australian designer David Payne has given us a handsome, easily constructed boat with lots of possibilities. Originally drawn as an open-cockpit daysailer and camp cruiser, the design has sparked so much interest that two cabin versions have been added. There are choices in rig as well. For those unromantic enough to prefer simple efficiency, the marconi cutter will be just the right thing. But, a shipload of young pirates might appreciate the gaff rig, with a string or two for each crew member. In light airs, setting the topsail will add another challenge.
