For 40 years, Brad Tinius lived on Hat Island and commuted by boat to his wooden-boat-repair shop in Everett, Washington. While he covered a lot of ground in his daily 6-mile passage across Possession Sound, he was no stranger to long crossings: he had sailed from Australia to Washington and on several occasions sailed between Washington and Hawaii, homeward bound in 2021 with his two daughters, who were then 18 and 21. Brad has a granddaughter now, Juniper, who is five years old. She and her parents also live on an island, Bali, but visit Hat Island, where Brad now has a boat for her. He designed the 8′ × 4′ sailing dinghy by carving a half model and taking the lines from it. He cold-molded the hull with three ⁵⁄₆₄″ layers of western red cedar. The finished boat, rigged for sail, weighs just 47 lbs and has been christened JUNIPER.
