The ABCs of Wooden Spar Construction
Watch Trailer
Episode Summary
For traditional small craft, it is difficult to beat solid-wood spars. Decidedly low-tech in construction, such spars require little or no gluing, no assembly table, and not much in specialized tools. They are easily shaped with hand tools.
In this episode, boatbuilder Milo Stanley presents the basics of making your own wooden spar. He’ll discuss selecting appropriate stock, lamination and gluing, the layout the spar’s dimensions and taper, the making of sparmaking gauges, and techniques for rounding and sanding.
